Questions raised while discovering FIF - updated

Postby RogerF » 06 Jun 2018, 07:29

Hello,

I have started discovering FlyIsFun in details.
The user manual is well done and very comprehensive.

However, I was not able to find the answer to these questions (or maybe I triggered some bugs):

1- Page 107: "Then place WPT and RWY in the airfield folder and the folder in “My WPT” folder." How can I specify the folder where the new Waypoint is created?
I get them on the top level and did not find a "move" function, nor for Wpt, nor for folders.

2- Is there a way to change the width of the airspace contours; I find them rather big for controlled or special use airspaces, and there are many in Belgium.
=> Update: there is a possibility to make the airspace contour less visible by setting the "fill" colour as transparent in the display settings

3- The manual explains that a runway can be copied and then changed into an ILS approach.
However, when I try to do this on an existing airport (World database), but the "copy" button is greyed out.
I tried to export it and import into the "My WPT" folder, but this is not allowed (cannot copy from the World database).

4- Page 120: I was able to export a route from Navigation (Fouchet) in FlyIsFun format (.GIR), but when I try to import it on FIF, I get the message "0 routes imported".
No error message, but the import does not work. What did I miss?

5- Page 121: The export does not work if I select one of the proposed folders (by default, the µSD card is proposed): "opening error".
I can export only if I select the internal memory and navigate to a folder there.
Is there a way to get "internal memory" proposed by default.

6- VAC: For most of the EB and LF airfields, I get two files in the PDF_System folders: VAC.PDF and XXXX_VAC.PDF, where XXXX = ICAO code.
Often, both PDF files are identical, but sometimes, the VAC.PDF file contains an older release of the VAC.
This could be linked to the selection of both VFR and VFR+ULM in the PDF import.

7- When I navigate in the options/parameters menus to explore them, it triggers a restart of the application even if I did not change anything.
Then, every time, I have to accept the trial period, the usage warning and the "GPS off" warning.

8- When should the "Rebuild database indexes" function be used?

9- If I use the function "proximity" on my favourite airfield EBTX and I select VHF, the frequency appears twice:
- "THEUX", with a "P" followed by a green dot
- "Verviers RDO", with a "P" followed by a red dot
Same happens with other airfields.
Why twice and what is the meaning of this green or red dot?

10- I am a bit concerned that the airspace proximity function only provides results when the airspaces are displayed on the screen.
I would indeed precisely use it to query about airspaces in the vicinity even if I have filtered them out at the selected zoom level.
Usually, such function is indeed not depending on the selected zoom level.

=> Update: Is there a way to highlight an airspace displayed in the proximity list? A short click has no effect and the long click only proposes the edit or export.

11- Most of my applications use maps in .mbtiles format, while FIF uses .sqlitedb
These formats are rather similar.
Any chance to have the .mbtiles format supported in FIF?

12- The EBLG airport has 5 TMA sectors, but only TMA1 and TMA2 are of interest for me because the other sectors are only active in night time.
Is there a possibility to switch them off without loosing them?
I changed their type into a type that I do not display to achieve this, but there might be a better way.

Thank you in advance for helping me.
Some questions can probably only be answered by the author, but I am sure that experienced users have the answer to the other questions.

Roger

Hello Roger

As forum member, I wrote the English and French manual, and will try answering your questions
And I agree, they are lot of info that are still missing

1 – Putting a WPT in the right folder
Creating a WPT via long press, the WPT is the created on the folder that is on top of folder threes
To copy and past in the right folder the WPT, you need
Long press on the WPT you created,
Then Edit
Then copy
As soon the WPT is selected as “copy”, 2 buttons appear on the bottom of the screen
One is for “Past” and the other for ???
Then select the destination folder
Then past using the past button on the bottom

3 – Data that are in “World database” folder and subfolders can’t be copied, that’s why you can’t copy them, but you can copy and past your data and runway
Link to donwload Belgium ULModrome created with Google Earth, you can play with them
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4uxly2kyethlh ... s.kml?dl=0

4 – Import .GIR routes created with Foufou Navigation
It works on my application, try having simple routes name
https://www.dropbox.com/s/imtrgb34qpz43 ... 3.GIR?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/92stz39pj4pty ... 3.NAV?dl=0

Or send me on of your route in both format for test

5 – No idea

6 – VAC are manually imported into FIF server
Petr Kouril is seeking for sources providing right APIs
May be if you provide him the right VAC placed in the right folders (same than ANP), it will help
are the Belgium VAC in Foufou up to date?

7 – If the subscription is on, the warning disappear
7 – If the GPS is on, the warning for GPS disappear to

8 – no idea

9 – Probably my fault
Some RWY are automatically generated with data imported from source used by Fly is Fun, some generated using data manually imported from Google Earth (cf above)
Displayed at the right column:
Letter P, G or U
P – Published by FLY is FUN
G – Generated by FLY is FUN
U – User defined
Green, Yellow or Red dot
Green point – Effective date or date of user creation within the last 28 days
Yellow point – Effective date or date of user creation within 29 to 84 days
Red point – more than 84 days

10 – no idea

11 – up to Petr

12 – no idea

Merci Antoine, your feedback and answers help me.

Of course, when starting to discover a new application, one tries to use known ways (from other applications).
FIF is a powerful application and I start figuring out its philosophy.

2 - I found a workaround: simply make the "fill" transparent for the airspaces cluttering the screen, in my case "special use airspace".
Then only the contour remains visible, making the "line" thinner.

3- Thanks for the link.
FYI, I just wanted to copy an existing runway to make an ILS.

4- I reduced the name to "EBFS" and still the import does not work.
I tried to attached the original file (with the long name), but "the extension gir" is not allowed on this forum.
Renaming it as txt triggered the same message "the extension txt is not allowed".
If you send me a private message with your Email, I will send it to you in other way.

6- Actually, I plan to use the FouFou import; in this way I get all VAC, including my personal ones (e.g. Jepp or ULIP).
Affirm concerning the BE VAC; I am regularly in contact with François and I inform him in case of changes.

7- Of course these warning will disappear, but the frequent restart of the app any time a parameter is checked (not even modified) is a bit surprising.

11 - See my reply to another post, where I provide more details.

Thanks for the welcome!
