StratuX AHRS and Mode-C/Mode-S without ADS-B

Troubles with application

StratuX AHRS and Mode-C/Mode-S without ADS-B

Postby hgrdrro » 19 Jun 2019, 12:44

At first I would like to state, that FlyisFun is a brilliant app, particularly for performing practice IFR approaches VFR.
Recently I have purchased Stratux 1.5b2-eu004 and paired it with FlyisFun.
I set all checkboxes including the AHRS box.
I get the WiFi icon, I get the GPS based position and if I move the Stratux case around I get a moving slip ball.
But I get no artifical horizon displayed. Do you have any idea, what the problem may be?

The second question is in regards to the visualisation of traffic. It works pretty well, but currently only targets with ADS-B are shown (Flarm not tested yet).
Due to the fact, that in Europe unfortunately only a few small aircraft are equipped with ADS-B most of the traffic is not shown.
In other applications, like the Stratux web based newly implemented Radar page these non ADS-B targets are shoen with a circle around the own aircarft.
The same visualisation is used by air avionics and its air traffic display.
Are you going to implement something simular. It would increase the traffic awareness so much.
Thanks in Advance

Dear Hans

I don't know the 1.5b2-eu004 firmware, but to get the Stratux AHRS working, you need to make sure Stratux AND FIF get a good GPS signal (not only FIF)
If one of both device (Stratux box or FIF) doesn't get its GPS signal, AHRS doesn't work

Other points, no idea, but FIF displays only what Stratux capture and make available

Have fun

hi Tonio,
for my understanding, Hans means a similar display like Powerflarm or flarm does.
I guess the problem is the kind of protocol
Stratux is dealing a different protocol than flarm does.(GDL90/NMEA out)

Hi Tonio,

the newest European version of the Stratux Software starting with 1.5b2-eu007 now supports the Flarm NMEA Format AND the GDL-90.
So it would be possible to show bearingless targets, when interpreting the NMEA Format.

Another problem that is not solved yet, is that I have no artifical horizon in flyisfun, independent from the firmware version I am using at the Stratux.
Any suggestions to solve this problem are very appreciated.

Have you ever thought about adding a donate page to your website, so that customers like me, who really love FlyisFun and use is frequently can spend some money to support the further development and support.

Hi Tonio,
just an additional information, that may help troubleshooting the AHRS issue.
The slip ball is moving properly, if I move the Stratux around, but I have no artifical horizon in the HSI.
Both Stratux and FIF have a proper GPS fix.

Hi Hans

If you have the fix on both, being a user as you, I have no idea on why the AHRS doesn't show
Have you the AHRS card pluged in the Stratux, is on option (stupid question)
and I won't have access to the Stratux before few days

May be Petr Kouril will know about that
Let him know which FIF version you are using, which Android version and which Stratux firmware...

Have fun

Hi Tonio,
for sure the AHRS module is installed and the horizon is working properly in the Stratux Web interface.
The FIF Version is 22.6 running on Android 7.0. The stratux version is currently 1.5b2-eu008, but FIF is not showing the horizon with the originally delivered version 1.4v5 as well.
As I mentioned I see the ADS-B targets and the slip indicator is moving, if I move the stratux case.
May be this information helps.

Hi Tonio,
yesterday I connected my Stratux to the EFB software sky-map and the artificial horizon worked as supposed.
So in my guess the problem will be an issue in the FIF software.
In particular because in FIF the slip ball is working properly, that is described in your manual, that it is only working, when both devices Stratux and FIF have a valid GPS fix.
I hope this information helps a little bit.

Hi Tonio,
today I tried FIF version 22.60 on a smartphone with Android 6.0 and on a tablet with Android 4.0. On both devices the artificial horizon of Stratux works properly.
On my smartphone LG G5 with Android 7.0 it does not work; see my last posts.
So it seems to be a matter of the android version or the screen resolution (2560 x 1440 Pixel).
I will continue testing with other devices and Android versions.
May be that this will help you and other customers.
FIF is an excellent EFB (the best for practicing IFR training in VMC) and Petr Kouril is a brilliant programmer.

Hi Hans

Thanks for all your observations and remarks

I only tried the "official" edition http://updates.stratux.me/builds/
https://github.com/cyoung/stratux/relea ... 39.img.zip
with Huawei P9, P20 Pro & Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, that are running Android 8 or 9

It was working fine but without FLARM info

Uuntil now, I didn't test it with Android 7

Best regards
