It's created thru automatically deriving (calculations) a zone theoretically projected out from the runway. When your GPS position conforms, the sound plays.

To be sensing a real marker, your phone or tablet would need to be shipped with and aviation receiver within it. So . . . ?

FiF calculates virtual spot regions appropriate for outer, middle and inner markers. The corresponding audio is played while your GPS position is located within the spot.

Exactly

FIF has database of the real markers. If you are overhead marker (GPS position), FIF plays the marker sound.

FIF can play also the marker sound, even if there are not real markers. FIF creates the virtual ones.
The settings is here: Menu/Application settings/Preferences, Marker beacons.

But ILS or RWY must be selected as a next WPT.
